What we do

A global force for music culture

Founded in 1949 as a nonprofit organization and recognized member of UNESCO, CISM brings together 11 national societies representing approximately 15,000 bands and ensembles. Our work spans advocacy, education, cultural exchange, and the celebration of music in all its forms.

Three guiding principles

01

Preserve, foster and promote music culture

Music is the heartbeat of community life. CISM is dedicated to ensuring that musical traditions are preserved, new forms of expression are encouraged, and access to music remains open to all. Through festivals, competitions, and cross-border collaborations, we keep music vibrant and relevant for every generation.

02

Represent common interests of international members

CISM serves as the united voice of music societies on the international stage. We advocate for recognition, funding, and political support for amateur music vis-a-vis governments and international organizations, ensuring that the contributions of nearly 1 million musicians are valued and supported.

03

Promote music education and training

Quality musical instruction is the foundation of thriving music communities. CISM advances this goal through workshops for conductors and instrumental teachers, the exchange of pedagogical best practices, and the establishment of standards that elevate musical education across member nations.
